Toulon, le 3 mai 1916

Cher Cousin, 

Je viens de recevoir ta lettre et je suis été (this is a made up conjugation in the South/South west of France) très heureux de te savoir en bonne santé, ainsi que toute ta petite famille. Pour moi, je suis toujours à l'hôpital attendant avec patience que l'on m'envoie en convalo ou à mon dépôt; et je pense que ça sera dans quelques jours. En attendant je me balade toute la journée sans rien faire une miette, d'ailleurs tu connais mon caractère. 

Ici il fait un temps splendide, on se croirait en plein été, à part de temps en temps ce vieux "Mistraï" comme disent les Marseillais qui fait des siennes. Je termine cher cousin en t'embrassant bien fort ainsi que Louise, et mes petits cousins et cousines.

Dear cousin, 

I have just received your letter and I am very happy to learn that you and your little family are in good health. I am still in hospital patiently waiting for them to send me to recover elsewhere or send me back to camp (/military depot); and I think it's going to be sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I spend my time walking without a single worry, you know my temper.

Over here, the weather is splendid, you would almost think it's Summer, other than when the old "Mistraï" (Mistral - Northwesterly wind that passes through Toulon), as the Marseillais would say, acts up from time to time. I will finish this letter off dear cousin by sending you, as well as Louise and your children, my love.
